So, you are thinking of an English Springer Spaniel as your next pet? Is it the right breed for you?
The ESS is an active breed of dog; they love to be outside running, jumping, swimming, ball chasing, retrieving and generally enjoying life. They are also very sociable dogs and love your company.
They are generally a robust breed with little health problems, but like most breeds of dogs there are certain diseases and conditions that do affect the breed, and these can be found under the ‘care of your ESS’ menu above.
There are two types of English Springer – the ‘Working’ type and the ‘Show’ type.
The main differences are that the worker is a smaller dog all round, lighter in body and bone than his ‘show’ cousin, and usually they have less coat to deal with.
They are very active, and this can sometimes be seen as a problem to people who are not used to very active dogs. The ‘Show’ type, on the other hand, is generally larger, with a heavier body coat and feathering. This will need managing, either by you, or by taking the dog to a grooming salon at least every 8 weeks.
The ‘Show’ type of ESS, (which is the type we breed) make lovely family pets, they require at least 1 hours exercise a day, and that can be either 2 half hour walks or one full hour walk, whichever suits your routine. If you choose to take them out for longer…they won’t say no!
So, do you have the time and dedication that this breed needs.
Time for companionship: they love to be with you.
Time for feeding: your puppy will need 4 meals a day initially.
Time for grooming: daily combing, and sessions with the groomer for bathing
and trimming.
Time for training: your puppies training will start as soon as you get home, with basic commands, and will continue as your pup grows.
Time for exercising: This starts with 5 minutes, per month of age, so 3 months old 15 minutes a day, working up to unlimited at the age of 12 months.
The average life span for an ESS is 12 years, and many live to 15, can you dedicate this time to your new pet?
Have you considered the expense of your new puppy?
The cost of purchase, vaccinations, pet insurance, vets bills, and feeding, none of these things are cheap – especially the vets bills!! I would think at the time of writing, a trip to the vet for say a course of antibiotics, and an injection, will cost around £65.-70 most excesses on insurances these days start at £100.00. So, cost must be a large consideration in your planning.
If I have NOT managed to put you off with all or any of the above, then maybe you deserve to share your life with an English Springer. Your English Springer in return will share with you unconditional love & loyalty, not to mention, his/her coat, mud, water and any treasure that he/she may find on their walk that they will be so proud to show you.
